The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has donated a fully equipped, ultra-modern ambulance to the state government — a gesture that marks a significant step forward in the implementation of Governor Bassey Otu’s “People First” health sector agenda.
The official handover ceremony took place recently at the General Hospital, Calabar, where the Honourable Commissioner for Health, Dr. Henry Egbe Ayuk, received the vehicle on behalf of the state government. Describing the donation as “timely, strategic, and deeply impactful,” Dr. Ayuk lauded both the NDDC and the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Bola Tinubu for prioritizing healthcare infrastructure in the Niger Delta region.
“This intervention is not only a testament to our President’s commitment to equitable healthcare, but it also reinforces Governor Otu’s resolve to ensure that quality medical services are brought closer to our people, especially in times of emergency,” the Commissioner noted.
Dr. Ayuk disclosed that the ambulance will be stationed within the Calabar area and tasked with supporting emergency response operations across key medical specialties, including obstetrics, gynecology, pediatrics, and accident trauma management. He issued a strong advisory against any form of misuse of the vehicle, emphasizing its lifesaving purpose.
“Ambulance services are meant to save lives — not to be converted into hearses for weekend funerals. Under this administration, such abuse will not be tolerated,” he said firmly.
Dr. Ayuk praised the collaborative spirit between the state and its representative in the NDDC, Rt. Hon. Orok Duke, whose proactive engagement ensured the smooth and timely delivery of the ambulance.
“This donation is a direct reflection of the value of strong partnerships, strategic foresight, and responsive leadership. It aligns seamlessly with Governor Otu’s vision of leaving no one behind in the state’s development journey,” he added.
The Commissioner also spotlighted Cross River’s leading role in adopting innovative healthcare solutions, including a groundbreaking partnership with Zipline, a global medical drone delivery firm. Through this initiative, the state has successfully delivered essential medical supplies to hard-to-reach communities, positioning itself as a national leader in immunization recovery efforts.
With the addition of this ultra-modern ambulance and a growing network of health innovations, Cross River State is fast emerging as a model for responsive, technology-driven healthcare at the subnational level — a clear affirmation that the “People First” governance philosophy is delivering results where they matter most.
